An air purifier’s usefulness depends heavily on how much air it moves and how often you can comfortably run it. Decorative features are secondary to appropriately sized, properly maintained filtration.
What CADR tells you
Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is a standardized measure of how quickly a cleaner supplies filtered air for specified particle types in a test setup. Higher CADR generally allows faster particle removal in similar rooms, but room geometry and placement affect practical results.
Look carefully at room claims
Some large square-foot claims assume a low number of air changes per hour. Compare stated CADR and the air-change assumption rather than relying only on a maximum-area badge. Rooms with open doors or high ceilings may need a different plan.
Filter replacement is a real expense
Check which filters are replaceable, their recommended intervals and the ongoing cost. A cheap appliance with expensive proprietary filters may be poor value. Cleaning a filter that is intended for replacement can reduce performance.
Noise determines whether you run it
The best setting on paper is not helpful if you turn the device off every night. Compare noise at the fan speed you expect to use. Consider bedroom placement, indicator lights and whether sleep mode substantially lowers airflow.
Avoid oversized health promises
Purifiers can help reduce certain airborne particles under appropriate conditions, but they do not solve every indoor air-quality issue. Source control and ventilation remain important. Specific medical claims require credible evidence and professional guidance.
Before you buy
- ✓Compare CADR, not just area badges
- ✓Estimate filter costs per year
- ✓Check noise at usable fan speeds
- ✓Plan placement and ventilation
Common questions
Does HEPA branding tell the whole story?
No. Filter efficiency and the amount of air passing through the unit both matter.
Can a purifier replace ventilation?
No. Ventilation and source control address issues filtration alone cannot solve.
The useful takeaway
Choose for your actual needs rather than an impressive list of features. Verify current specifications, price, availability, warranty and return conditions with the retailer or manufacturer before checkout. If a product has safety implications, follow the relevant manufacturer guidance.
